In recent days, the city’s mayor, Paolo Donadoni, met with a delegation from Italgas, the company holding the concession for the city’s natural gas distribution service. The purpose of the initiative was to illustrate the operating methods adopted by the company in the operation of the city network, with particular reference to pipeline monitoring techniques.
Specifically, Italgas presented Optosensing, a cutting-edge technology that allows, through the application of two fibre optic sensors on the pipeline, to monitor in real time any variations in position and/or temperature of the laid network that may be caused, for example, by geological movements or neighbouring activities in the area. Thanks to the Optosensing system, it is therefore possible both to optimise maintenance operations and to know in real time the status of each monitored pipe segment.
Italgas put into operation the first stretch of network equipped with Optosensing technology in the country in March 2024, thus initiating continuous and punctual monitoring of the infrastructure. The data collected by the system can now be made available to authorities both for research purposes and for close monitoring of the territory.
